Chinese antique carpets are divided mainly into 6 varieties, i.e. Ninghsia carpets, Beijing carpets, Tibetan carpets, Xinjiang carpets, Qinghai carpets and Inner Mongolian carpets.

Ninghsia antique carpets: It is now very expensive on international market and its output little. Ningxia carpet is commonly used in temples, e.g. carpet for the dragon embracing post, cushion for chanting scriptures, mat for arm-chair and cushion used in drawing room, carpet for gallery and saddle mat. Their colors are yellow, brown, three blue, and red (all being plant color). Technology is of hair inserting. Wefts are of 4 batches passing through twice, while warps of plain twisting and 2 strands, with "8" shaped buckles.

Beijing antique carpet: Formed later, influenced mainly by style of Xinjiang, Ningxia and Inner Mongolian carpets. However, produced for use by emperor and his family, Beijing-type carpet has obvious style for emperor family. Pattern is symmetrical, even and elegant in character. Patterns are of rolling flowers, "the five blessings applauding longevity", scenes, branch flowers, brocade grounds, "4 dishes and 1soup", being typical pattern characters. Technology is fine and firm, sufficient in hair inserting, cotton warp and weft, with warp being thick. Its variety is single, with decoration function as dominance, and used commonly in drawing room.

Tibetan antique carpet: The early Tibetan carpet was mainly the knitting one with wool warps and wefts. Later the hair inserting technique was used; in particular Tibet introduced the cotton technique from India in 1904 and began employ cotton in carpet. This made Tibetan carpet light and thin, and rich in patterns. As Tibetan believe the secretly handed down Buddhism (handed down from Nepal), carpet patterns are commonly of lotus flower and lotus symbolizing the Buddhism. The form-changed flower patterns are in different poses and with different expressions, and in thousands of postures, making numerous collectors to deeply admire. Besides, blackish white, reddish white and bluish white etc. chequers and tiger skin lines carpets are also very rare. Its variety is relatively little, and the purpose commonly as the bed articles, cushion for chanting scriptures, saddle mat etc.

Xinjiang antique carpet: With the longest history, it was greatly influenced by Persian patterns, especially the geometric patterns, after opening to traffic of the "Silk Road". Xinjiang carpet is commonly of red ground. Being simple and unsophisticated, there are commonly dozen of patterns, e.g. Dayang flower, Kaiguang, Bogu, flowers and birds, zygote flowers, Smarkland, transverse flowers, five fingers flowers, "rolling flower, fragmental flower and pomegranate flower" (called commonly Keshiker), also of scenes, figures and animals. Technology is commonly of three times wefts, with warps being thicker. The variety is of carpet hanging on wall; carpet lying on floor, carpet for saddle and saddle-bag etc.

Qinghai antique carpet: With long history, and scrapped carpet of the New Stone Age unearthed. The pattern character is of big branches, big leafs, big Bogu, big flowers and birds, red ground and blue ground, with the camel (plant color) as dominance. Technology is commonly of 50~60 lines, wool warps and wefts. Qinghai carpet employed cotton thread later, with little varieties, being commonly 4 x 6 double kang (a heat able brick bed in North China) carpet.

Inner Mongolian antique carpet: With long history, pattern character is commonly the blue (whitish blue and jade blue) as dominance. Patterns are commonly flowers and birds, scenes, rolling flowers, Bogu, animals, plants etc. (Technology: weft is of thick 3 strands, twisted with imported threads). The practical type varieties are common.

In the past time some people thought, Chinese carpet was spread from Persia after the "Silk Road" was opened to traffic. In fact, Chinese carpet occurred more than 4000 years ago while the "Silk Road" began in the Han Dynasty, with only approximately 2000 years' history.

That Chinese carpets are broadly welcome is not only because of its long history and technology of manually knitting, and what is more important is the pattern of Chinese carpets being rich, which recorded truly the 5000 years' culture. Their patterns are ingenious in design and profound in implied meaning, and the scanning of patterns of Chinese antique carpets is just as reading a volume of encyclopedia.
